Guillaume often accompanied Jean-Paul on his trips to the cave.

Guillaume and Tate made their way around the farm, checking to see that all was well. Tate remarked that the farm looked very prosperous; the barns and the farmhouse all had new rooves, and there were more cows than when she had last visited.

"Yes," explained Guillaume. "Farmer Jean-Paul and I have been fortunate. Shall I tell you the story of how it came about?"

"Please," replied Tate. "I would like that very much."

As they walked toward the house, Guillaume began his story.

"When I was just a kitten, Jean-Paul would put his cheeses in the cave on the hillside to ripen. I often accompanied him on his trips to inspect the cheeses. Once, I ventured to the cave by myself.

"Not knowing any better, I had taken a bit of bread from the kitchen and carried it with me to the cave for my lunch. Being rather distractable, I soon grew tired of it and left it on the floor of the cave.
